MADE TO ORDER
SUKUMO is proud to offer a natural indigo dyeing service, in collaboration with Asai, a family-run dye house of Kyoto, Japan. We can dye clothing, home textiles, and small items to client specifications. We can develop indigo colour variations and create bespoke patterns on request.
ONE OF A KIND
SUKUMO dyeing is done by hand, using the highest organic quality ingredients. Naturally occurring variations make each piece unique. Masafumi Asai is a master dyer with over fifty years of experience dyeing fabric for high-end kimono. Twenty years ago, with his son, Naoyuki, he began to dye with naturally-fermented sukumo indigo.
Asai sources sukumo from the Toyamas, one of only five surviving indigo farming families who carry on the ancient sukumo tradition of Tokushima, Japan. Asai uses natural ingredients for dyeing: sukumo, natural lye (wood-ash water), sake, and limestone powder. No artificial chemicals are added.
MADE TO LAST
Asai works with genuine sukumo, naturally fermented in smallbatch vats. Sukumo is the name given to indigo leaves which have been prepared for use in the traditional indigo dyeing process. Master dyer Masafumi Asai and his son, Naoyuki Asai, keep the
vats fermenting for months to produce the true “Japan Blue”.
ITEMS WHICH CAN BE DYED
We accept items made of cotton or silk. These can be new or used. Synthetic materials on garments, such as nylon stitches or plastic buttons, will remain undyed. Items can be dyed from a mid to dark blue hue. Since the dyeing process is done individually by hand, please understand that we cannot provide colour matching. If you would like the deepest possible colour, an extra 20% is added for the cost of the additional dye.
We can dye colours other than white. The indigo blue colour will blend with the original colour of the fabric. For example, if the item is red, dyeing it with indigo will most likely create a purplish colour. We can dye stained items. However, if the stains are too dark, dyeing may not fully conceal them.
We can dye fabric yardage, but it may need to be cut into large pieces for hand-dyeing. The price for dyeing is calculated by the total weight of the item: £0.54 per gram. The minimum order is £50. Please let us know at email@example.com the length and width of your fabric.
SUKUMO dyeing is done by master craftsmen by hand, so please allow a lead time of at least 2 weeks for bespoke requests. If you have a specific requirement such as waterproof, please do not hesitate to get in touch and these can be arranged on request.
Sending items will take place at the Customer’s initiative, convenience, and expense. Failure to provide a tracking number will void the reception. Your items should be shipped to SUKUMO Kyoto - Nishi-imadacho, Saiin, Ukyo-ku ,Kyoto, Japan 615-0003
